MTMBO MOTTINGHAM

If you’re one of those to have already heard of MTMBO, you’re one of the lucky few. Having released a string of tracks back in 2015, the London artist only resurfaced a year ago with ‘The Hill’ as part of 37 Adventures’ ‘Odd Numbers Volume 1’ compilation. It’s a great pleasure to have MTMBO back in our lives, with the blissful new listen that is ‘Mottingham’. In the same soulful vein as preceding songs, ‘Mottingham’ possesses a similar airy and mystical quality to that of Kidepo’s ‘Water’ or River Tiber’s ‘Patience’ thanks to the mirage of delicate guitar melodies, soft-touch keys and textural vocal effects. Through the haze of harmony, MTMBO delivers a conversation, not between two individuals, but between two emotions - anxiety and reassurance. It’s something many go through in the early stages of a relationship; wanting to take that leap of faith and run for the hills simultaneously. “Don’t get too close,” warns the first thought, and so counters the second, “I might not leave.” It’s a process that never truly finds a resolution, at least not within the confines of MTMBO’s soulful dreamscape ‘Mottingham’. - HT
